About Lion House
Lion house is named after the lion statue on the roof truss, which is dedicated to Töger von Abo Flemmer, a Danish lion catcher, who lived in this house in Market Street in the 1840s. He captured wild animals (including lions) which he sold to the zoos in Europe. The lions were held in cages on Market Square before being transported to the Port Elizabeth harbour. One of the many special features of Lion House is the print collection of Thomas Baines, the artist and explorer. In 1848 when Thomas Baines passed through Cradock, he said that it had a population of about 9000 persons (4300 whites and 4490 coloureds) and was impressed with the great buildings of both English and Dutch architecture. Lion House has a lovely back fruit garden, perfect for dogs. It has an atmospheric fireplace in the lounge and air-conditioner in the main bedroom. Lion House is suitable for a family of five, a couple, friends who don’t mind sharing a bathroom, or for someone travelling on their own.
Sleeps six in three bedrooms (one king and two rooms with two single beds each and two bathrooms, one en-suite and the other not en-suite, but full of charm as it was the original bathroom, placed historically, at the back end of the house.
